A master and four other seafarers have avoided jail in Italy after their MSC Cruises vessel smashed into a dock and a river cruiseship in Venice in 2019.
The accident involving the 2,675-berth MSC Opera (built 2004) sparked calls from the Italian government for an immediate cruiseship ban for Venice's Giudecca Canal.
Following a plea bargain with prosecutors, captain Carmine Siviero was sentenced to five months in jail, while the chief engineer and chief electrician received terms of two months each.
