Onomichi Dockyard has opened talks to acquire Mitsui E&S Group's main shipbuilding facility in Chiba, near Tokyo, as part of a next generation transportation and energy development project.
Mitsui E&S announced the talks at the same time as its third-quarter earnings this week.
The move would be a significant one in Mitsui E&S’s withdrawal from shipbuilding in Japan and the more general decline of shipbuilding in the country.
