The US maritime community is mourning the loss of respected shipbroker George L Axiotakis, who died this month in New Haven, Connecticut, aged 90.
The New York City native spent nearly 50 years in the industry at the old CD Mallory & Co, Glander International and MJLF & Associates, from which he retired in 2004.
Originally trained as an accountant, Axiotakis saw his shipbroking career rise with the birth of the secondhand market for US military Liberty Ships after World War II, during the ascendancy of what were known as the “New York Greeks” and “London Greeks”.
