Taiwan’s Wan Hai Lines has placed an order for 12 containerships at newly formed Japanese shipbuilding joint venture Nihon Shipyard.
The 3,013-teu containerships are costing $47.1m each, bringing the total value of the deal to $565.2m.
The order has been placed through Wan Hai Lines Singapore.
Wan Hai Lines said the ships will be operated on intra-Asia trades and the investment has been made after an upturn in freight rates and earnings in the region since November last year.
