Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) is exploring the viability of hydrogen and fuels derived from it as possible fuel sources for the future of container shipping.
The liner operator is also pioneering the use of biofuels within its existing fleet.
“There’s no one single solution to decarbonise shipping," said Bud Darr, MSC's executive vice-president for maritime policy and government affairs.
"We need a range of alternative fuels at scale and we need them urgently,” he told the inaugural Maritime Transport Efficiency Conference in Geneva.
