Greece announced on Wednesday it plans to expand its territorial waters to the west from six to twelve nautical miles.
The country will soon pass a law to that effect, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in parliament.
The move will apply to the waters to the west of Cape Matapan, the southernmost tip of the European continent and a busy commercial waterway.
