Members of the shipping industry in favour of using exhaust gas scrubbers to meet the IMO 2020 fuel regulations have rebutted scientific studies claiming the devices may harm marine life.
Some scientists and the IMO itself say there is a lack of independent evidence about the effects of acids and other toxins that scrubbers release into the ocean environment.
