Despite increased cost, interest in LNG-fuelled vessels is growing stronger, especially from the tanker and liner sectors, based on enquiries at South Korean yard group Hyundai Heavy Industries.
Between January 2017 and March this year, HHI received orders for nine dual-fuelled tankers, along with five dual-fuel-ready containerships.
“It looks like we are near the tipping point for LNG-fuelled vessels,” says Ryu Hong Ryeul, vice president of the company's initial design group.
