Perhaps the organisers of this week’s World Economic Forum in Davos do have a sense of irony after all. Long ridiculed as a week-long schmooze-fest for the world’s elite high up in the Swiss Alps, it has come to symbolise the way money, power and politics has triangulated over the past 40 years to create a global economy that is far richer but far more unequal than ever before.
