China has been playing a high-stakes gamble on tanker pollution with dramatic images of the blazing suezmax Sanchi suggesting it may well have just lost this wager.
The Chinese authorities bet they would be better off building their own compensation system — rather than signing up to the international Fund Convention system. The pollution from the National Iranian Tanker Co (NITC) ship will be a key test of this strategy.
