It was well known that US President Donald Trump intended to use one of his favourite trade weapons to attempt to tackle China’s dominance in the maritime industries.
But how far he was willing to go took many by surprise. It came as a proposal by acting US trade representative Juan Millan to impose sanctions in the form of port fees on ships with connections to China — whether they are built in the country or operated by its companies.
