Shadow fleet ships linked to sanctioned oil trades have been involved in about 50 accidents and mechanical failures in a sign of the dangers posed by lightly regulated shipping, according to a new paper by a US think tank.
The accidents since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 have included fires, engine failures, collisions, loss of steerage and oil spills, according to the paper due to be published on Thursday by the Atlantic Council.
