India’s Great Eastern Shipping is sending a fire-damaged platform supply vessel to a domestic recycling yard.
The Mumbai-listed company’s Greatship subsidiary has sold the 3,700-dwt Greatship Rohini (built 2010) for scrapping at a reported $649 per ldt.
This firm rate equates to $1.6m.
VesselsValue assesses the ship as worth $4.7m for further trading.
But the Greatship Rohini suffered damage due to a fire onboard in February 2021, the shipowner said.
It is expected to be delivered to an unnamed buyer in the current quarter.
Greatship retains eight other supply ships, eight anchor-handling tug supply units, two multipurpose support ships and four jack-up rigs.
The Greatship Rohini was acquired from Wintermar Offshore of Indonesia in 2010 for $22.5m as a resale at Colombo Dockyard in Sri Lanka.
Offshore vessels have low steel content and are often unattractive demolition candidates.
Following the accident last year, the Indian Coast Guard retrieved the bodies of three seafarers from inside the ship.
Two were found between decks, burned beyond recognition, while the third was found in the engine room, according to India’s director general of shipping, Amitabh Kumar.
One other seafarer, officer Gurbeender Singh, was taken to hospital with burns.
The Greatship Rohini was 92 nautical miles (170 km) off the Mumbai coast when the blaze broke out in the engine room.
