Major scrubber manufacturer Alfa Laval is making a giant leap into wind propulsion in a joint venture with Wallenius to develop a car carrier with towering telescopic wing sails.
The 50:50 joint venture, AlfaWall Oceanbird, will develop sails that can extend to 80-metres high for a futuristic 200-metre long transatlantic car carrier able to carry 7,000 vehicles.
The Oceanbird sails could reduce emissions by 90% on the largest oceangoing vessels, and allow the proposed car carrier to cross the Atlantic in 12 days when sailing at an average speed of 10 knots, the companies claimed.
