The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it recovered the voyage data recorder from the 5,330-lane-metre El Faro (built 1975) late Monday evening. The vessel sank during Hurricane Joaquin in October 2015 resulting in the death of 33 crew members.
In late April, the NTSB located the data recorder, but it had not determined the best way to bring it up from the surface.
