The icebreaker Xuelong, which translates as Snow Dragon, reported that it had encountered less ice than expected on the Northern Sea Route when it docked in Iceland.
With the ongoing shrinkage of the Arctic ice cap, the attractions are obvious for a passage that is 40% shorter than the conventional route between Asia and Europe.
The voyage is being seen as a sign that the world’s second largest economy is extending its reach in the Arctic.
