This month, LNG shipping marks a special anniversary. On 28 January 1959, the aptly named 5,123-cbm Methane Pioneer (built 1958) set sail from Lake Charles in the US, carrying the world's first shipment of LNG.

The converted cargoship completed the transatlantic voyage safely, despite encountering heavy seas and some alarming creaking noises, arriving at Canvey Island, east of London in the UK, on 20 February.
