Transmed Shipping, the company that managed the Christopher, was founded in 1976 by husband-and-wife team Charalambos and Chariklia Mylonas.

The couple were both trained lawyers practising in the town of Famagusta, Cyprus, at the time Turkish troops swept through the island in July 1974. The Mylonases lost everything when the Turks took over Famagusta.

A few months later they travelled to Greece to collect payments from some of their Greek clients and were persuaded by Athina Martinos of Thenamaris to stay.
