In the latest of such incidents, a seafarer died on the 227,000-gt cruiseship Harmony of the Seas (built 2016) at Marseilles last month in an accident that investigators believe was caused by human error.

This week one of the leading lifeboat manufacturers, Norsafe, said it has become increasingly concerned by the recent accidents and said that training is vital.

Endre Eidsvik, senior vice-president of service at Norsafe, said: “A lifeboat is your last chance to evacuate a vessel, so it is vital that crew are properly trained and take part in regular drills.”
