Coumantaros was one of the last in the generation of Greek owners that witnessed the legendary 1947 purchase of 100 Liberty ships from the US Navy. It was the deal that got Greek shipping going again after the Second World War. Coumantaros took part in it through Southern Star Shipping Co, the family company he co-founded in New York that year at the age of 25.
