Leading liquefaction proponents on the US Gulf Coast have already been laying the groundwork for their second projects.

Cheniere Energy, Texas oilman Michael Smith and California-based Sempra Energy are all exploring their next round of export infrastructure at greenfield sites.

Cheniere has proposed a 13.5 million tonnes per annum development at Corpus Christi, Texas, where chief executive Charif Souki said no marketing is required because of ample existing customer interest.

“We’ll start spending real money this summer,” he added.

Freeport LNG founder Smith, meanwhile, has proposed the four-train Gulf Coast LNG export plant at Brownsville, near the Texas-Mexico border.

However, he said he is waiting to see how the Department of Energy reacts to all of the US export applications under review.
