Traders are anticipating a rush of orders for LNG cargoes from Japanese utilities after a series of powerful earthquakes shut down nuclear plants across the country earlier today.

Damage has been reported to Tohuku Electric’s nuclear power plant and others shut down automatically when an 8.9-magnitude quake struck off Honshu Island some 373 kilometres north-east of Tokyo.

Japan’s second largest power producer, Tokyo Electric Power Company, is said to have seven nuclear plants put out of action.
