South Korea ramped up its LNG imports by around 10% in March to 3.8 million tonnes, compared to 3.4 million tonnes in the same month last year.

Data shows the country paid $2.14 billion for the purchases, against $1.75 billion in March 2010. Over 511,000 tonnes of the fuel was secured on the spot market.

The hike in imports has been put down to a need to build stockpiles and meet increased demand because of colder than average weather, according to Reuters.
