Japan’s catastrophic earthquake and tsunami changed the calculation for shipping players that had been mulling LNG newbuilding orders.

In the last few weeks at least seven new LNG carriers have been confirmed alongside a clutch of optional orders.

A letter of intent for up to six of the world’s first newbuilding floating storage and regasification units has also been signed.

In short, more deals on new LNG tonnage have been concluded in the last three to four months than in the whole of last year.
