Japan’s top 10 electric utilities’ appetite for regasified LNG grew by a substantial 31% year-on-year in June.

The earthquake-stricken Asian importer used 4.03 million tonnes of send-out gas to generate electricity last month, compared to 3.08 million tonnes a year earlier, a Reuters report shows.

However, the country’s 10 utilities saw a 5.4% drop in electricity generation to 73.50 billion kilowatt-hours.

The earthquake and tsunami which hit in March resulted in a nuclear shutdown in Japan and has led to greater demand for LNG.
