Italy’s LNG sector faces an uncertain outlook with domestic gas demand forecast to be relatively flat and little sign of new regasification projects breaking through the regulatory gridlock.

The troubled economic outlook along with increased investment in renewables and greater emphasis on energy efficiency means gas demand is unlikely to pick up.

This in turn will have an impact on the numerous LNG projects in the pipeline.

Massimo Di Odoardo, European gas and power research analyst at Wood Mackenzie, said he estimates the average annual growth rate for gas demand in Italy will be less than 1% over the next 10 to 15 years.
