Hess has set the ball rolling on a major upstream development of natural gas reserves off Western Australia to be used as LNG feedstock.

The so-called Equus project will centre on the exploitation of gas found by the US operator in as many as 13 successful exploration wells on its 100%-owned permit WA-390-P.

Hess is set to use a large semi-submersible production unit to produce the gas, and is inviting expressions of interest by 19 September for two front-end engineering and design contracts that will focus on the semisub and related subsea hardware, said well-placed sources.
