Power players are eyeing construction of a $350 million LNG import terminal in Colombia.

Municipal utility Empresas Publicas de Medellin and electricity generators Colinversiones and Isagen are assessing potential sites on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, industry sources said.

“Colombia needs a regas plant for thermal generation,” said Energy Minister Mauricio Cardenas (pictured), adding domestic gas demand is rising faster than production.

The hydroelectricity sector plays a major role in domestic power production, leaving the country susceptible to the El Nino effect.
