Japanese utilities are mulling the use of floating LNG import solutions to provide back-up capacity.
Tokyo Gas’ Hiroshi Kondo told the LNG Global Congress this week the proposals are a way to address natural disasters such as last year’s massive earthquake and tsunami.
The disaster crippled the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant but only damaged one very small import terminal.
If such an incident were to have a wider impact on Japan’s LNG import terminals, however, it would be a “big problem”, Kondo said.
