Hawaii Gas could spend up to $330 million on a three-stage LNG import plan for the US archipelago.
The state utility is planning to buy up to 20 ISO-type containers, each with capacity for 12,000 gallons, or 45 cubic metres, under the initial step for LNG transport on standard containerships.
This stage, which is expected to require capital expenditure of around $5 million, will run between 2013 and 2015.
