German cruise operators are looking to use LNG to fuel vessels while in port in Hamburg and Kiel ahead of tighter emissions regulations, writes Eric Martin.
Aida Cruises, the German line of Anglo-American industry titan Carnival, has included dual-fuel engines in a recent order for two vessels at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan. This will allow them to run on LNG in port when they are delivered in 2015 and 2016, a spokeswoman said.
TUI Cruises, meanwhile, has signed a letter of intent with local marine services provider Eckelmann Group to supply its two ships with electricity during calls at Hamburg and Kiel beginning in the 2013 cruise season.
Eckelmann plans to deliver electricity to TUI’s ships using a so-called e-power barge.
