BHP Billiton is closing in on a capacity deal at the GNL Mejillones import terminal in Chile.

The Australian resources giant has already signed a 20-year agreement for “significant capacity”, according to local reports.

GNL Mejillones chief executive Frederik Janssens is quoted as saying both parties have agreed to notify their respective boards for final approval. BHP would only say it is in talks for capacity.

“We confirm that BHP Billiton is in discussion with GNL Mejillones in regards to LNG regasification capacity to meet the longer term energy needs of our operations in Chile,” said a spokesman.

“The commercial terms of this arrangement are confidential,” he added.
