Pre-qualification is under way for both shipowners and yards interested in providing up to 16 LNG carrier newbuildings to Russia’s Yamal LNG project.
Full specifications of the vessels, which will need to be capable of withstanding arctic conditions, have yet to be determined by Yamal partners Novatek and Total, however.
The developer’s preference is said to be for 170,000-cbm LNG carriers.
This capacity means at least four vessels will be required per train, industry observers suggested, depending on the final size of the production unit and the cargo destination.
