Shipping players are seeking to climb aboard the North American liquefaction bandwagon as off-takers size up transport needs.
Although requirements will depend on destinations and contract terms, among other factors, it is clear that first-mover Cheniere will have a big impact.
“If you look at the volumes of LNG that will come out of Sabine Pass alone, and you make a reasonable assumption as to what the destinations might be including some in South America, then you can find anywhere between 20 and 30 new large LNG carriers being required,” said Richard Pratt of Norwegian shipbroker Fearnleys.
