Engine maker Rolls-Royce has won a deal to provide engines and propulsion systems for the “world’s first” LNG powered tugs.

Norway’s Bukser og Berging ordered the two vessels, which will enter into service in late 2013 for Statoil and Gassco.

Rolls-Royce Marine will deliver two gas engines and an LNG tank system, along with an azimuth propulsion system for each tug.

The combined power and propulsion system is estimated to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 30% compared to similar conventional vessels, according to Rolls Royce.
