Would-be LNG buyers from US states and territories will find their shipping options limited by the federal Jones Act.

The protectionist legislation, officially dubbed the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, requires cargoes carried between domestic ports travel on US-flagged ships that are American-built, crewed and owned, although securing a waiver is possible.

The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority is taking a close look at mainland LNG for its planned floating storage and regasification unit, which is to be supplied by US floating regas specialist Excelerate Energy.

“There are vessels out there that would work for it,” said Excelerate chief executive Rob Bryngelson.
