Developers behind a new type of LNG cargo containment system are having discussions with shipyards about tank construction.
Braemar Technical Services company Wavespec and General Dynamics’ arm NASSCO have been in talks about the possibility of building the flat-panel, semi-membrane, prismatic-shaped (FSP, pictured) tanks at one yard and shipping them out to other facilities for installation.
The prospect of fitting the tanks onto an existing vessel has also been considered.
The new tank system is the result of more than 10 years of detailed modelling on the part of General Dynamics, which built a series of LNG carriers with Moss-type aluminium tanks back in the mid-1970s, and Wavespec’s knowledge of the global LNG shipping sector.
