BG Group has approached Asian yards over a potential $1 billion-plus LNG carrier order as it seeks to meet the shipping needs of a swelling supply portfolio.

The UK-headquartered company wants shipyards to bid on construction of five 170,000-cbm to 177,000-cbm newbuildings, according to yard sources.

It is said to be hoping to place a firm order around the end of September.

BG is thought to have started talks with South Korea’s big three of Samsung Heavy Industries, Hyundai Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, plus Japanese yards Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries.

All of BG’s 12 owned LNG carriers were ordered from Samsung with the last ship delivered in 2010, said broker Clarksons.
