The port of Antwerp is pursuing a proposal to build marine LNG fuelling facilities ahead of the introduction of tighter shipping emissions regulations.
Given similar strategies in Hamburg and Rotterdam, this means Europe’s three busiest ports are acting on expectations that tougher rules will make LNG a key fuelling option for ocean-going vessels.
Antwerp is working to have a program in place by 2015 when international shipping regulations will put stricter limits on nitrogen oxide and sulphur oxide emissions, said Tessa Major, a technical manager for the port authority.
