Almi Gas of Greece has firmed up the first two LNG carrier newbuildings under a daring $1.6 billion investment plan for up to eight ships.

Chairman Costas Fostiropoulos said the new company has confirmed two 160,000-cbm vessels with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering.

Deposits on the ships will be paid within the next two months, he added.

Fostiropoulos said the vessels, which are due for delivery in July and September 2014, have been fixed for 10-year periods at a rate of around $80,000 per day to a big-name charterer.
