Total has has increased its shareholding in Novatek, the Russian gas company planning the Yamal LNG project.

The French supermajor bought a 2% stake for about $800 million, bringing its total interest to nearly 14.1%.

“This transaction reaffirms Total's long-term commitment in Russia,” the company said.

Total said it purchased the shares from Novatek's main shareholders.

Novatek is Russia's largest independent gas company. It also controls the Yamal LNG project, an Arctic export scheme where Total is a 20% shareholder.
