Norway’s Statoil has boosted its natural gas stockpile off the coast of Tanzania to 9 trillion cubic feet following a second big discovery.

Together with supermajor partner ExxonMobil, Statoil said it has discovered about 3 Tcf of gas at its Lavani-1 well on block 2.

The drillbit hit 95 metres of “excellent quality” reservoir sandstone with high porosity and high permeability.

Lavani was drilled just 16 kilometres from the partners’ earlier Zafarani success.
