Australia Pacific LNG has firmed up a long-term 1 million tonnes per annum supply deal with Japanese utility Kansai Electric.

Finalising the 20-year agreement is seen as a key step towards a final investment decision for a second train at the Queensland project.

The project’s first train is under construction with operations set to begin in 2015.

“This binding long-term supply agreement with Kansai Electric indicates the strength of demand for LNG from Asia and marks another significant milestone in the Australia Pacific LNG project’s progress towards a two-train development,” said Grant King, boss of both APLNG and Sydney-listed Origin Energy.
