ExxonMobil has started the search for a contractor to build a massive floating liquefaction unit to develop the Scarborough gas field off Australia, it is understood.

The US supermajor is holding talks with engineering companies about its plan to construct a 6 million tonnes per annum LNG floater, industry sources said.

A pre-front-end engineering and design process is expected to kick off next month.

A full FEED process is expected to follow around six months later at which time the successful contracting team would be teamed with a shipyard partner.
