A group of 21 federal lawmakers has written to US Energy Secretary Steven Chu to push for quicker action on LNG exports.

“We urge you to bring a renewed sense of urgency to the approval process,” wrote the congressional grouping, led by Republican Representative Bill Johnson and Democrat Tim Ryan, both of the shale gas-rich state of Ohio. They argued exports present a solution to the supply-demand imbalance that has led to low gas prices.

Their support for US exports, however, is far from a consensus view as several in Congress have voiced opposition to liquefaction projects.

The Department of Energy has approved several applications to export LNG from proposed liquefaction facilities to countries that have a US free trade agreement.
