Anadarko Petroleum has made another giant gas discovery off the coast of Mozambique.

The US oil company may now have enough reserves outside the giant Prosperidade complex to kick-start its LNG development ambitions.

The Atum-1 well hit major volumes of gas believed to be connected to the recent Golfinho-1 find, the company said this week.

Anadarko reckons this new gas complex could have more than 30 trillion cubic feet of recoverable reserves held entirely within its Area 1 permit.

That is potentially important for Area 1 partners because the resource could be developed without waiting for unitisation with neighbouring Area 4, operated by Eni, which will be required for Prosperidade.
