Japanese regional electric utilities continued to import swaths of LNG cargoes in March as nuclear power utilisation approached zero.

The Federation of Electric Power Companies said its members snapped up nearly 5.53 million tonnes of the fuel last month, up 34.6% from the 4.11 million tonnes bought in March 2011.

Consumption of the fuel increased by 31.8% to 5.04 million tonnes.
