Japan could import a record 85 million tonnes of LNG this year as the nuclear power sector faces the possibility of a nationwide shutdown by April.
The forecast by US-based consultancy IHS Cera represents an 8.8% jump on the 78.1 million tonnes estimated to have been imported in 2011 following the March earthquake and tsunami that crippled Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
