Japan’s IHI Corporation has reportedly developed a new method that could reduce LNG storage tank construction timelines by around a year.

The ‘jack climbing’ approach entails assembling the roof on the ground and then hoisting it up once the inner tank walls have been built to a certain height.

Currently outer tank walls are completed before the roof is added.

The method is suitable for tanks with capacities from 10,000 kilolitres to 250,000 kilolitres, IHI said.

• Fjord Lines has amended an order for two new cruise ferries, which are due for delivery next year, so they will be able to operate solely on LNG.
