Japan’s electricity utilities may face a bigger-than-expected LNG bill this year as its currency weakens and the nuclear outlook grows murkier.
The Tokyo-based Institute for Energy Economics of Japan (IEEJ) said in a report this week that currency devaluation alone could lead the total cost of countrywide LNG imports to 6.5 trillion yen ($79.1 billion) this year — an increase of 1 trillion yen on its estimate just two months ago.
